Prepositions and Conjunctions

Here I am giving you some useful phrases for both writing tasks.  They will help to make your essay flow better and enable you to use complex sentences instead of simple ones.  I have given each phrase in an example sentence. Please email me if anything is not clear.

Prepositions

  1. Owing to/Due to a lack of resources, many publicly-funded libraries have been closed.
  2. Because of his lack of experience, he was not chosen for the position.
  3. I have some doubts concerning the new regulations.
  4. In spite of the difficulties in moving to another country, it can be a rewarding experience.
  5. According to recent reports, the economic problems are not as serious as many thought.
  6. There are many advantages to living in the countryside, such as clean air, open spaces and a close community.
  7. Paper-based media are becoming a thing of the past, except for novels which are still very popular.

*Remember that prepositions must always be followed by a noun or a verb in the -ing form.  

 

Conjunctions

  1. Not only is news on the internet free, but it is also much more up-to-date than printed newspapers.
  2. As technology advances, the likelihood of people working is offices is becoming much less.
  3. Although women have much better opportunities than they did in the past, there is still much progress to be made.
  4. Even if parents ban children from using the internet at home, they will probably get access to it in other places.
  5. Provided that some limits are put in place, there is no reason why children should be banned from watching television.
  6. Whereas some people thrive on challenges, others find them intimidating.
  7. Teachers should be given training on new ideas in teaching so that they can give their pupils the best education possible.

*Remember that conjunctions join two complete sentences.

TASK

For each preposition and conjunction given, write a sentence of your own.  Write the kind of sentences that you would use in an IELTS Writing Task.
