Reading Questions: Classifying statements

This kind of exercise involves matching statements to the correct category. For example, the categories could be four scientists mentioned in the text and you have to decide which statement each scientist made.  Another example would be they give you four time periods (such as 18th, 19th, 20th and 21st century) and you have to decide which event happened in each period.

The best way to deal with this exercise is to look at each category one at a time. Let's look at the example of the scientists:

  • Read the statements very, very quickly to get an overall view.
  • Look at the name of the first scientist.
  • Scan the text to find his/her name.
  • Read the sentence before and after it.
  • Now read the statements and find the one which is most similar to what you found in the text.
  • If you need to find more than one statement for each scientist, carry on reading through the text to find the next mention.
  • When you have done that, do the same process with the next scientist.
