Task One Academic: Processes

Sometimes, you are asked to describe a process.  To do this, you need to have certain language and certain grammar. Before you look at this page, you should do the format for Academic Task One.

The language of processes

To start the process:

  • First,
  • First of all,
  • To begin with,

To signal the next stage:

  • Then,
  • After that,
  • Afterwards,
  • Following that,

To show that 2 things are happening at the same time:

  • Meanwhile,
  • At the same time,
  • Simultaneously,

To end the process:

  • Finally,
  • Eventually,

*Remember that eventually can only used when the last stage happens after a long period of time.

The grammar of processes

To describe a process, you will need to use both active and passive sentences.  Do not use only the passive - it becomes repetitive. If you are not sure about the passive, check it out here.

TASK

Change these sentences from active to passive or passive to active.

  1. Shakespeare wrote Hamlet.
  2. The rubbish is taken away by trucks.
  3. The famers milk the cows in the evening.
  4. The clouds are pushed higher by the mountains.
  5. The examiners collect the papers after the test.
  6. The fees are paid by the parents annually.

TASK

Look at the process below. Write a description based on the information above and what you learnt from the Outline of Academic Task One. There is a model answer here.
