Reading Questions: Matching headings to paragraphs

You are given a list of headings and asked to match them to a paragraph.  There are more headings than paragraphs (for example, 7 headings for 4 paragraphs).

This exercise is very similar to matching statements to paragraphs. Remember you are reading for gist, not for specific information.

  • First, read all of the headings.  Look for key words - underline them if you wish.
  • Then, skim read the first paragraph. Try to summarise it in your head.
  • Go back to the headings and look for the heading which has the key words most similar to what you summarized.
  • If two headings seems similar, try to prove why one of them is wrong.
  • Then, move on to the next paragraph and do the same thing.
